Why is sleep so important?

But why is sleep so important?

We know just from experience that sleep makes us feel good. When we have a great sleep, we wake up feeling great. When we have a poor sleep, it is hard to even get out of bed in the morning. Sleep is an essential part of life. Our bodies need it!

The function of sleep is still being studied, but it is believed that sleep performs a restorative function for the brain and body. In early life, sleep deprivation can contribute to a child developing behavioural problems or even decreased brain mass.

Sleep is also just as important for adults and seniors. We all need it so that we maintain our stamina and energy to meet the needs of our day. As people age, they find it more difficult to sleep, due to a decreased hormones and melatonin that promote and regulate sleep. But despite that, it is still important to get as much sleep as when you were younger.

You can help yourself get a good nights sleep by remaining active (exercise is great for making you sleepy), seeing your doctor to address any sleep disorders or other disturbances, and by making your night time environment as comfortable as possible.
